Both teams are rolling of late. The Yankees have won five straight. The Angels have been even better recently. They’ve won six consecutive games. Given the pitching matchup, I feel the Angels have an excellent chance of being the team which extends its streak.
Weaver is 6-1 with a stellar 2.61 ERA and 0.899 WHIP in 10 starts this season. In his last start, he allowed one run on just three hits, through eight innings. At home, he’s been nearly unhittable. In four starts here, Weaver has an incredible 0.83 ERA and 0.49 WHIP, averaging better than eight innings. He’s 4-0 in those games and has 30 K’s vs. only two walks, allowing only a single home run.
On the other hand, Hughes is 4-5 with a poor 4.94 ERA. On the road, his ERA climbs all the way to 5.12. He’s 1-3 in four road starts and is averaging just 4.8 innings in those games. He’s pitched far fewer innings than Weaver overall but has allowed more than twice as many home runs on the season.
Hughes is also 1-2 with a terrible 8.70 ERA and 1.984 WHIP vs. the Angels. He faced them earlier this season and gave up six runs in 3 1/3 innings.
Meanwhile, Weaver is 5-2 (team was 7-3) in 10 starts vs. the Yankees. He allowed one run on three hits in eight innings the last time he faced them, recording a dominating 11 K’s. Consider LA. -Ben Burns
