Colorado has won the last two meetings with Colorado State by double digits, but I’m expecting a much tighter contest this time around. Prior to the last two meetings, Colorado State had either won or lost by 3 points in 8 of 11 meetings.

The Buffaloes won last season’s meeting 28-14 but only led by 7 in the 4th quarter. I don’t believe they have enough playmakers to pull away in this year’s meeting. It really hurts that they lost wide receiver Paul Richardson to an ACL injury. He was expected to be their best playmaker.

Colorado State was better than last season’s 3-9 record showed as it suffered four losses by seven points or less (three by three points). With 15 starters back, I’m expecting to see a few more wins out of the Rams in 2012.

Consider that underdogs of 3.5 to 10 points with at least 6 more starters returning than their opponent, provided it is the first of month of the season, are 46-16 ATS since 1992. Teams fitting this situation have been underdogs of 6.6 points on average but have only lost by an average of 0.3 points.

The Buffaloes have failed to cover the spread in 8 of their last 10 games, and I expect this trend to continue.

This is a huge series for the Detroit Tigers. They have lost three straight games coming in to fall three games behind the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central division. They are looking at this Game 1 as their most important contest of the season.

Doug Fister continues going under the radar each season. The right-hander has posted a 3.67 ERA and 1.232 WHIP in 19 starts this year. He sports a 3.51 ERA in four career starts against the White Sox as well.

Jake Peavy has struggled in his last two starts against Detroit this season. He has given up 10 earned runs over 12 1/3 innings in those two outings for a 7.30 ERA.

The Tigers are 19-4 in home games vs. an AL team with an on base percentage .330 or worse in the second half of the season this season. The White Sox are 1-7 in Peavy’s last 8 road starts. Chicago is 1-7 in its last 8 games as a road underdog of +110 to +150. Detroit is 22-6 in its last 28 home games. Bet the Tigers Friday.

Arkansas State is coming off a breakout season, but they lose most of last year’s starting lineup on both sides of the football. They are also breaking in a new head coach as Hugh Freeze left for Ole Miss and has been replaced by former Auburn offensive assistant Gus Malzahn. And while Arkansas State was already an up tempo offensive squad, Malzahn will turn the heat up even more and try to play as fast as possible. The bad news for Arkansas State is that Coach Malzahn and his wide-open style of play is tailor-made for Oregon, and it makes them ideally-suited to get absolutely blown off the field by the Ducks and their Gang Green Attack. Coach Chip Kelly and the Ducks LOVE to play this style of football and they should have a blast going against a reasonably talented, but extremely inexperienced Arkansas State squad. If this game were played late in the year, the margin would be a lot lower, but in the 1st game of the season, Oregon will rip these guys a new one and should win be 7 or 8 touchdowns as crazy as that sounds. MLB Picks: August 30th 2012
Boston Red Sox vs. Los Angeles Angels
Pick: Los Angeles Angels -154

At 62-69 on the season, the Boston Red Sox have essentially packed it in. They’ve lost seven of their last 10 games overall and traded away three of their best players. This team is clearly looking ahead to next season.

At 68-62 on the year, the Los Angeles Angels have a lot still to play for. They are doing their part in making a push for the postseason of late, winning six of their last eight games overall.

Zach Greinke is having yet another solid season, going 11-5 with a 3.87 ERA and 1.266 WHIP in 27 starts this year, including 5-2 with a 3.34 and 1.073 WHIP in 11 home starts. Greinke has also had solid success in five career starts against Boston, posting a 3.03 ERA and 1.255 WHIP.

Jon Lester has been a big reason why the Red Sox have struggled all season. The left-hander is 8-10 with a 4.97 ERA and 1.360 WHIP in 26 starts this year. He was supposed to be their ace coming into 2012.

Greinke is 16-1 (+14.3 Units) against the money line as a home favorite of -150 or more over the last 2 seasons. Greinke is 25-3 (+20.8 Units) against the money line in all home games over the last 2 seasons. Bet the Angels Thursday.
