NFL Betting: Luck, Colts Meet Cutler, Bears in Week 1

Maybe it was destiny that guy named Luck would end up with a team that sports a horseshoe on its helmet. As we look forward two months to opening weekend in the NFL we wonder if that combination of the rookie quarterback in the Colts helmet will have any luck against the NFL odds.
Presumably No. 1 overall draft pick Andrew Luck, the former Stanford standout, will make his regular-season professional debut Sept. 9 in Chicago against the Bears.
The Colts, of course, struggled mightily last year without Peyton Manning, losing their first 13 games and finished 2-14. Indy management then blew up the team, letting Manning go, canning Coach Caldwell and making wholesale changes on both sides of the ball. So this team is in full rebuilding mode.
Chicago, meanwhile, has quietly become a chic pick to click in the NFC this season. Two years ago they hosted the NFC championship game, losing to the rival Packers, and they started 7-3 last year. But QB Jay Cutler went down and out for the season in Week 10, RB Matt Forte joined him on the IR in Week 12 and Chicago lost five in a row to drop from playoff contention. This year, with a healthy Cutler now joined by his former Broncos teammate Brandon Marshall, the Bears look like they could give Green Bay a run in the NFC North.
As of Thursday afternoon, 57 days away from kick-off, BetOnline is listing Chicago as a 10-point favorite over Indy for that season opener, with an ‘over/under’ of 40.5. The Bears can also be backed at -500 on BetOnline’s Week 1 money line, with the Colts getting +405 to win this game outright.
Last year two rookies started at quarterback on opening weekend. In the more successful debut Carolina’s Cam Newton threw for 422 yards and two scores and ran for another score, although the Panthers got beat by Arizona 28-21. In the other debut Cincinnati’s Andy Dalton went 10-for-15 for 81 yards and one TD, playing the first half of the Bengals’ 27-17 victory over Cleveland.
