The Los Angeles Angels are showing solid value Tuesday as an underdog to the New York Yankees. They have a big edge on the mound tonight and should not be a dog because of it. Plus, New York is coming off a series against the Boston Red Sox, which could certainly set them up for an emotional letdown in this spot. The Angels have gone 27-13 in their last 40 games overall to pull within 1.5 games of the Texas Rangers in the AL West division. No team has played better over the last month and a half. Dan Haren is 12-6 with a 2.81 ERA and 0.972 WHIP in 24 starts this season, including 2-0 with a 1.09 ERA and 0.689 WHIP in his last three starts. He has given up just three earned runs in 24 2/3 innings during this stretch.

A.J. Burnett is 8-9 with a 4.54 ERA and 1.346 WHIP in 23 starts this season, including 0-2 with a 7.00 ERA and 1.611 WHIP in his last three starts. Burnett has yielded 14 earned runs in 18 innings over this span. Haren has had the Yankees’ number, going 4-1 with a 3.78 ERA in eight career starts against New York. Burnett is 2-2 with a 4.85 ERA in nine career starts against Los Angeles. In his two most recent starts against the Angels, Burnett has allowed 10 earned runs and 22 base runners in 12 1/3 innings, both resulting in Yankees’ losses. The Yankees are 4-17 in Burnett’s last 21 starts vs. a team with a winning record. The Angels are 8-2 in Haren’s last 10 starts vs. a team with a winning record. New York is 0-6 in Burnett’s last 6 starts when working on 5 days of rest. Take the Angels Tuesday.

I’m siding with the Angels, winners of 7 of their last 8, and one of the hottest pitchers in baseball, Dan Haren, over the Oakland A’s on Friday night. Haren has been nearly untouchable over his last 3 starts (all wins), giving up a total of 2 runs over 25 innings of work (0.72 ERA). That moves him to 10-5 on the season with a 2.61 ERA and 0.95 WHIP. The A’s will throw Brandon McCarthy, who has pretty solid numbers on the year, but a 1-5 record over 11 starts. He also hasn’t had much luck against the Angels over his career, going 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA and 1.757 WHIP in 4 starts. This includes his most recent outing, back in April of this year, where he allowed 7 runs on 14 hits over 5 1/3 innings versus LA. Oakland has lost 6 of their last 7 games overall and while they’ve had some moderate success against the Angels in recent meetings, I think it’s clear that these two teams are currently heading in opposite directions, and fast.

We’ll back the best interleague team in the league over the last several seasons tonight as the Los Angeles Angels take down the New York Mets. Los Angeles leads the majors with a 52-24 interleague record since 2007, going 27-10 on the road. The Angels have compiled a 1.85 ERA while winning three of four against the NL this year. They continued that success by opening this three-game set at Citi Field with a 4-3 win Friday. Dan Haren is 6-4 with a 2.54 ERA and 0.977 WHIP in 14 starts this season, and 4-1 with a 2.75 ERA in eight road outings. There’s no question we are backing the better starter tonight by far, and even at a good price as only a small road favorite. Mike Pelfrey is 3-5 with a 5.11 ERA and 1.370 WHIP in 14 starts this year for New York. Pelfrey gave up 6 earned runs in 6 innings in his lone career starts versus Los Angeles. Haren is 1-0 with a 3.94 ERA and 1.031 WHIP in five lifetime starts versus New York, and his teams are 4-1 in those games. Take the Angels on the Money Line.

Los Angeles Angels vs. Minnesota Twins: MLB Picks for May 29th 2011

Los Angeles Angels vs. Minnesota Twins
MLB Pick: Los Angeles Angels -139 (May 29th 2011)

The Halos have alternated wins and losses in their last six games and enter this contest off a 1-0 blemish in the Twin Cities on Saturday afternoon. Rest assured, LA will come to play on Sunday.

Toeing the rubber for the Angels will be Monterey Park, California product Dan Haren. In his last start at home against Oakland, Haren was roughed up for five earned runs and seven hits in 7.0 frames. LA dropped a 6-1 decision to the A’s on that day. Before that performance, Dan was outstanding in three previous starts surrendering only four earned runs and 15 hits in 22.1 innings. Even though No. 24 didn’t pick up a win in any of those trips to the hill, he did manufacture and respectable 1.61 ERA!

Minnesota will send right-hander Carl Pavano to the mound. So far this season, Pavano has been hit hard. With 10 starts in the bank, Carl has been smashed for 36 earned runs and 72 hits in 61.1 frames. That’s bad enough for a 2-4 record and an elevated 5.28 ERA. Daytime efforts have given No. 48 trouble too. With the sun shining, Pavano has been clocked for 17 earned runs and 32 hits in just 25.1 innings. That’s adds up to a soft 2-2 mark and a woeful 6.04 ERA!

It’s hard to ignore Minny’s 6-14 record at home this season and 1-11 mark in the third game of a series. Combine that with LA’s nifty 14-6 record in its last 20 against righty’s and their 9-4 mark in its last 13 against team from the AL Central and there is more than enough technical support to make this investment. Take Los Angeles with Haren. Thank you and best of luck, Tom Stryker. (Touthouse.com)
