This is a 1* free NHL pick on the Minnesota Wild on the “puck line” over the Edmonton Oilers on Friday night.
Congrats to everyone that’s joined me with back-to-back massive 10* “puck-line” winners (Ducks +261 & Blackhawks +190). Those two winners were added to my now red hot 7-2 “puck-line” streak. I feel the intensity in which the Wild will be playing with tonight and the overall ineptitude that this injured Oilers team has been performing at of late definitely justifies in laying the 1.5 goals for the plus-money return. If history is any precedence, then the Wild have to be loving their chances this evening as they’ve taken all three in this series so far this year. The Oilers are 17-22-7 overall and 9-11-3 on the road. They’ve lost two straight, and I’ve been against them each time as Anaheim won 3-1 on Monday, before Chicago got the job done with a 4-1 victory for me on Wednesday. The Oilers were eliminated from playoff contention by the Ducks the night before their second straight loss in the series and come into this contest with four starting forwards on the injured list. The Wild are 25-18-3 overall and 14-7-2 at home. Simply put, this is a do-or-die game for the home side in my estimation. All Minnesota has to do is either win tonight or at Colorado on Saturday to secure a playoff berth. Coming off a momentum building 2-1 win over the defending champions on Tuesday, I fully expect the Wild to come out with a highly concerted effort on both ends of the ice this evening and to take care of business tonight and to not let fate ride on an all deciding effort in the final game of the year. This has been a bad matchup for the Oilers all season and with a lineup that’s been devastated by injury, all signs once again point to an epic beatdown. As mentioned above, you may want to consider a second look at laying the 1.5 goals for the plus-money return in this situation.

Not exactly a clash of the titans here. The Oilers are in 13th in the West, 13 points back of the 8th place team. The Blue Jackets have been even worse. In fact, not only are they 15th (out of 15) in the West, they’ve got the fewest points in the entire league. Both teams should view this as an opportunity to pick up a rare victory. With this game being played at Columbus, I expect the Jackets to have the advantage. The Oilers won this season’s lone earlier meeting, a 6-3 victory back in early December. That came at Edmonton though. The Jackets are now 0-3 their last three visits there and 5-15 their last 20. Recent games at Columbus have been a different story. In fact, the Jackets are a perfect 4-0 when hosting the Oilers, since the start of 2009. The Jackets were laying a minimum of -155 (and as much as -220) for those games. We’re getting them at a far more reasonable price here. I feel that’s providing us with solid value. Consider a play on Columbus. Washington has the opportunity to become just the sixth team in NHL history to begin the season with eight consecutive wins and it is also looking to start 3-0 on the road for the first time since 1991-92. The Capitals are coming off a blowout victory over Detroit on Saturday, which was also undefeated at the time, and the four days off in-between could cause a momentum buster. Because of the sensational start, we are getting some great line value with the home team.
Edmonton is 4-1-1 at home, losing to Vancouver by a goal in regulation and losing to Minnesota in a shootout. The Oilers have won two in a row at home, starting with a shutout against the Rangers and following that up with a revenge win against the Canucks on Tuesday. The defense has been outstanding of late as Edmonton has allowed only six goals in regulation in its last five games and it possesses a 1.50 GAA at home and its .943 save percentage at home is third best in the NHL.
It will be strength against strength as the Capitals bring in a .296 power play percentage which is third in the NHL while the Oilers have killed 91.4 percent of their opponents power plays, good for fourth in the league. Heading west could be the disadvantage for Washington as this is its first time out of the eastern time zone. As mentioned, this is just the third road game for the Capitals and this is easily the biggest price they have put down. Washington is 2-5 in its last seven games as a road favorite of -151 to -200.
Capitals defenseman Mike Green likely will not play after hurting his ankle in their last game against the Red Wings as he has not been able to practice this week. Washington is sixth in GAA in the league and the absence of Green, a two-time Norris Trophy finalist, will hurt which could provide an edge for the Oilers who have had struggles putting the goal in the net. The Oilers are 5-1 in their last six games as home underdogs and the home team has dominated this series, going 13-2 over the last 15 meetings. 3* (70) Edmonton Oilers
