My money is on the Georgia Bulldogs to cover the 12.5-point spread against the top-ranked Kentucky Wildcats. What a lot of people don’t realize is the hype that surrounds Kentucky basketball has allowed oddsmakers to make a killing. More times than not the public is all over the Wildcats, but they are just 5-14 ATS this season, covering just once in their last eight games. I’m currently showing around 60% of the public betting on Kentucky in this game, yet the line is moving in the favor of Georgia.

I will admit Georgia doesn’t look like a great play if you just look at their recent performances. The Bulldogs are just 1-4 in their last 5 games, all of which were games inside the SEC.

What a lot of people overlook is the magnitude of this game for Georgia, compared to what it means for Kentucky. Georgia is just 10-9 overall, which means they aren’t making the NCAA Tournament unless they win the conference tournament. With this game being played on ESPN, I expect the Bulldogs to treat this game like it was the National Championship. I also expect a sell out crowd that will relish at the opportunity to see their team take down the No. 1 team in the country.

Georgia lost 63-66 at home to Ole Miss on Saturday as a 2-point favorite. That was actually a good thing for Georgia against the spread tonight. The Bulldogs are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games following a ATS loss and 24-8 ATS in their last 32 games following a S.U. loss! BET THE BULLDOGS! This is a great spot to load up on the home team as a small favorite. Georgia has won seven straight meetings against their in-state rivals, including a 73-72 win at Georgia Tech last December. Georgia comes into the game having lost three straight, but are showing signs of breaking through with a win. They’ve lost their last two games by a combined 8-points. The Bulldogs biggest strength is their defense, and I expect Georgia to bring their best defensive effort to the court tonight. They are allowing just 55.2 ppg on 37.4% shooting on their home floor. In the Yellow Jackets first true road game of the season, they scored just 52 points on 35% shooting.

When the oddsmakers back the Bulldogs it’s usually a good sign to take them. In the two games they have been favored this year they won both easily. The Yellow Jackets have been overrated all season, failing to cover three games as a favorite and the only game where they were listed as an underdog. Georgia is a remarkable 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS loss, 21-6 ATS in their last 27 games following a S.U. loss, and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as a home favorite.

Off an ugly 0-3 SU and ATS run versus the likes of Alabama, LSU and Auburn, things won’t get any easier for Florida on Saturday afternoon in Jacksonville. The Gators must tackle a Georgia team that is filled with confidence right now off five consecutive wins over Coastal Carolina, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.

Thankfully, history will be on UF’s side on Saturday afternoon. Since 1990, Florida has assembled a profitable 18-3 SU and 15-6 ATS record in this SEC series against Georgia. The Gators have been outstanding in the regular season coming off a bye too. Since 1980, UF is a sizzling 41-16 SU and 36-20 ATS coming off a week of rest including a powerful 32-8 SU and 27-13 ATS in this set matched up against a conference opponent. With those two parameters applied and the Gators tackling a foe that is not off a blowout win of 10 points or more, this team trend zips to a strong 22-2 SU and 19-5 ATS.

On offense, Florida will welcome the return of starting quarterback John Brantley. Out with a high ankle sprain since October 1st, Brantley will bring plenty of emotion and potential to a Gators offense that was lost without him in losses to LSU and Auburn. Before getting injured against Alabama, Brantley had torched the Crimson Tide defense for 190 yards passing and a touchdown. With “Big John” behind center, Georgia won’t be able to stack the box defensively (like LSU and Auburn did) which means UF’s powerful ground game should get back on track.

Any way you look at it, this contest is going to make or break Florida’s season. A win would put the Gators back into the thick of things in the SEC East. A loss would knock UF out completely. Florida head coach Will Muschamp put his troops through a number of physical practices during last week’s bye. All of that hard work will pay off Saturday afternoon with a victory. Take Florida! Thank you and best of luck, Tom Stryker.

Georgia head coach Mark Richt has came out and said how the Bulldogs are going to commit more to the running game behind star freshman running back Isaiah Crowell. Vanderbilt has just got done going up against the great rushing attacks of South Carolina and Alabama, and it is going to be hard for them to get up for another physical game. Vanderbilt allowed 284 rushing yards in those two games. I actually think by committing to the run, it is going to open up Georgia’s offense for more big plays in the passing game. On the other side of the ball, Georgia has a very underrated defense. The Bulldogs haven’t allowed more than 13 points in three straight games, and have held each of those teams to less than 56 yards on the ground. Vanderbilt’s offense figures to make things even easier on the Georgia defense. The Commodores have the 116th ranked offense, averaging just 244.4 total yards a game. Georgia is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games as a favorite of 10.5 or greater, 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as a road favorite, and 15-5 ATS in road games after allowing 14 points or less in 2 straight games since 1992. South Carolina vs. Georgia Prediction: College Football Picks for September 10th 2011

September 6th, 2011

South Carolina vs. Georgia
Prediction: Georgia +3 / Under 51 (September 10th 2011)

The South Carolina Gamecocks (1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS, 1-0 O/U) scored a whopping 56 points in crushing East Carolina by 19 points in Week 1, but they also gave up a whopping 37 points along the way and that doesn’t bode well as they prepare to visit SEC rival Georgia (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS, 1-0 O/U) in this one. Yeah, I know the Bulldogs took a tough 35-21 loss on the chin in its Week 1 home loss to Boise State, but they’ve also won two of the last three meetings against the Gamecocks. Yes, South Carolina took it to their SEC rivals in last season’s 17-6 home loss, but Georgia is in what I like to call ‘desperation mode’ and I believe it is that desperation that that will spur them on to the outright home win over Steve Spurrier’s ballclub. I know there is absolutely nothing that says the Bulldogs are going to win this contest as nearly all of the key trends surrounding this contest point to an emphatic South Carolina win, but I don’t like the Gamecocks’ defense one iota and I believe the Bulldogs are going to score their fair share of points in pulling off the upset that leaves both of these teams at 1-1 SU after two weeks. If you don’t like my call for a Bulldogs upset, I’m also going to advise collegiate gridiron gamblers to play the Under in this contest. The Under has played out nine times in the last 10 meetings overall. The winning score in this contest has been 20 points or less in six of the L/7 meetings between these teams and I believe it could play out again despite the fact that both of these teams allowed a ton of points in their respective season openers. So, to review, I like the ‘desperate’ Bulldogs to pull off the huge upset while the Under plays out for the umpteenth time between these longtime SEC rivals.
