Both starting pitchers in Game 2 tonight will be in their most uncomfortable environments. Max Scherzer has been off his game on the road all season, while Derek Holland has been at his worst at home. I fully expect double-digit combined runs by game’s end tonight. Scherzer has posted a whopping 4.89 ERA and 1.391 WHIP in 16 road starts in 2011. The OVER has gone 9-5-2 in those 16 contests. Holland sports a 4.53 ERA and 1.566 WHIP in 17 home starts this season. The OVER has gone 13-3-1 in those 17 games. In fact, the OVER is 22-9-2 in Holland’s 33 starts in 2011. In his last start at Texas, Scherzer gave up five earned runs and nine base runners in 5 innings of a 13-7 Detroit victory. In his last start against Detroit, Holland yielded four runs and six base runners in 4 innings of a 11-4 Rangers triumph. Texas his hitting .293 and scoring 6.1 runs/game at home this season. Detroit is batting .285 and putting up 5.1 runs/game against left-handed starters this year.
Holland is 10-1 to the OVER as a home favorite of -125 to -175 this season. Detroit is 51-23 to the OVER after a game where the bullpen gave up no runs this season. The OVER is 6-1 in Tigers last 7 games vs. a left-handed starter. The OVER is 33-14-4 in Tigers last 51 games with the total set at 9.0-10.5. The OVER is 7-1-3 in Rangers last 11 games with the total set at 9.0-10.5. The OVER is 8-2-2 in the last 12 meetings in Texas. Bet the OVER in Game 2 Monday.

Detroit Tigers vs. Kansas City Royals
MLB Pick: Over 8.5 -110 odds (September 21st 2011)
Two of the hotter teams in baseball take the field in Kansas City when the Royals host the Tigers. Kansas City has won eight of their last nine games, doing so with offense for the most part. They’ve scored 5 runs or more in six straight games and they’ve pounded out double digit hits in seven straight games. Charged with slowing them down is Max Scherzer who hasn’t done so in both of his outings against them in August. Scherzer allowed 11 runs and 16 hits in just eight innings of work in both of those meetings. He’s 7-5 with a 5.33 ERA in 14 road outings with eight of those games going Over the total. Melky Cabrera (3-11), Jeff Francoeur (5-18), Chris Getz (3-9), Johnny Giavotella (4-5), Alex Gordon (4-10), Eric Hosmer (3-6), Mitch Maier (5-9) and Brayan Pena (2-4) all feast on the Tigers’ starter. Kansas City is hitting almost .370 in their last eight games and they’ve gone Over the total in six straight games.
Felipe Paulino is not in good form right now either. He has allowed 11 runs and 13 hits in his last 17.3 innings of work. Overall, the righty is 3-6 with a 4.28 ERA in 18 starts. He allowed 3 runs and six hits in almost seven innings pitched to the Tigers in August. Detroit’s offense is hitting right around .275 in their last eight games and they are putting up nearly 5 runs per game over that span. They are hitting .295 against the rest of the A.L. Central and they are looking to enter the playoffs on a roll. Kansas City’s bullpen has 24 losses and 19 blown saves so they are susceptible to blowing leads. These two offenses are in such good form that we expect a slugfest between the Tigers and Royals tonight. Check out more of Steve Merril’s MLB picks each day at Touthouse.com
Detroit Tigers vs. Tampa Bay Rays
MLB Pick: Detroit Tigers +101 odds (August 24th 2011)
The Detroit Tigers have built a sizable lead in the AL Central mainly by beating teams from their own division. However, they’ve also collected plenty of wins against the Tampa Bay Rays this season. The Tigers will try to extend their win streak to six with a seventh consecutive victory over the Rays on Wednesday night. Max Scherzer (13-7, 4.23 ERA) gets the nod in this one over Tampa starter Wade Davis (8-7, 4.43 ERA). Scherzer has posted a 2.84 ERA in two career starts against Tampa, allowing just four earned runs in 12 2/3 innings. The Rays are hitting just .236 and scoring 3.6 RPG at home this year. Detroit has been hot at the plate, scoring five or more runs in nine of their last 11 games. The Tigers have the edge in momentum, on the mound, and at the plate in this one. Bet Detroit Wednesday.

Detroit Tigers vs. Kansas City Royals

The Detroit Tigers are showing solid value here Sunday as just a small road favorite over the Kansas City Royals. Detroit has won five of six and will be looking to sweep the Royals this afternoon. Max Scherzer was dominant in the second half last year and he’s back at it again in 2011. Scherzer has posted a 2.14 ERA in his last five starts. He began that stretch July 7 by allowing one run over 6 2-3 innings of a 3-1 win at Kauffman Stadium to improve to 4-2 with a 2.34 ERA in seven starts versus Kansas City. Scherzer has surrendered two runs in 20 1-3 innings to win his last three against the Royals.
Scheduled Royals starter Bruce Chen (5-5, 4.37) is 0-3 with a 7.48 ERA in four starts since beating the White Sox on July 6. He allowed 10 runs in four innings of a 12-5 loss at Boston on July 27, then lasted just 4 2-3 innings Tuesday and gave up three runs on 115 pitches in an 8-2 loss to Baltimore. Chen is 3-3 with a 6.07 ERA and 1.406 WHIP in 10 career starts against Detroit. The Tigers are 7-0 in their last 7 games as a road favorite. Detroit is 7-0 in Scherzer’s last 7 starts with the total set at 9.0-10.5. The Tigers are 9-1 in Scherzer’s last 10 starts during game 3 of a series. Bet Detroit Sunday.
