The Pittsburgh Panthers will be highly motivated for a win when they hit the court Monday night. They’ll host the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who are one of the most overrated teams in the country in my opinion.

Pitt will be looking to bounce back from its 69-79 loss at Marquette on Saturday. It had been playing very well prior to that contest, winning seven of its previous eight with its only loss coming at Louisville 61-64. It also wants revenge on the Fighting Irish after losing each of its last four meetings in this series.

Notre Dame clearly isn’t as good as its 20-6 record would indicate. It has played three overtime games in its last five contests, winning all three, which includes two victories over lowly DePaul. It lost the other two on the road via blowout to Syracuse (47-63) and Providence (54-71). The Fighting Irish will be exposed on the road once again tonight against a superior Panthers squad.

The Fighting Irish are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. Notre Dame is 6-14 ATS in its last 20 games following a S.U. loss. The Fighting Irish are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600. The Panthers are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games following a S.U. loss. Bet Pittsburgh Monday.

Alabama Crimson Tide (12-1 SU, 6-7 ATS, 6-5-1 O/U)
The second-ranked Crimson Tide closed out the 2012 regular season with three straight wins including its thrilling 38-28 comeback win over in the SEC title game. Alabama has put up a whopping 38.5 points per game this season while limiting their opponents to a miniscule 10.7 points per game defensively.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish (12-0 SU, 7-5 ATS, 2-10 O/U)
Notre Dame won each and every game they played this season including their season-ending 22-13 win over longtime rival USC. The Fighting Irish have covered the spread in two straight games as they get set for their title game showdown against the defending national champion Crimson Tide. Notre Dame averaged a fine, 26.8 points per game this season while limiting their opponents to just 10.3 points per game defensively to rank first in the nation.

Notre Dame enters this week coming off a very controversial win over Stanford last weekend in overtime but it was a solid come-from-behind victory that kept it undefeated. The Irish are ranked fifth in the initial BCS rankings as they are now 6-0 on the season and looking very strong across the board. This game is a tough one however as they are surely in for a letdown after that big win and with a game at Oklahoma next week, the lookahead is a strong possibility as well.

BYU dropped to 4-3 following its home blowout loss against Oregon St. which is also undefeated, but the game was not as lopsided as that score indicates. The Cougars were outgained by only 64 total yards but three interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown for the last score, did them in. their previous two losses were by a combined four points and those came on the road so they have fought very hard away from home. This is easily the biggest line BYU has seen all year.

Notre Dame was able to cover against Miami in its last game when it was favored by double-digits but this game presents a much tougher challenge. Notre Dame has struggled on offense this season for the most part as it is 76th overall and 68th in scoring and it will have another challenge here. BYU is extremely tough on defense as it ranked fifth in total defense and seventh in scoring defense. Holding Boise St., Hawaii and Utah St. to 10 points combined over a three-game stretch is very impressive.

Playing tough defenses has hurt the Irish as they are 5-20 ATS in their last 25 games against teams that are allowing 285 or fewer ypg and they have been outscored by over 11 ppg in those contests. To no surprise, Notre Dame has average just 16.6 ppg on offense. BYU meanwhile is 6-0 ATS in its last six road games after allowing 125 or fewer rushing ypg in two straight games while going a perfect 4-0 ATS in its last four games following a loss. Odds makers aren’t sold on Miami because its defense has been horrendous. However, I’ll gladly take the points here as the Hurricanes go up against a Notre Dame team that has been quiet offensively. I don’t believe the Fighting Irish, who rank 97th in the country with 351.2 yards per game, are explosive enough on offense to cover this hefty number.

The Notre Dame defense has been spectacular, but it is yet to see an offense as dynamic as the one it will see Saturday. Miami is averaging 472.6 yards and 35.6 points and it is doing most of its damage through the air. In fact, it ranks 15th in the nation with 328.4 passing yards per game. This is significant because the Irish have shown they can slow down the run, but they’ve yet to be really tested through the air by a QB like Stephen Morris, who has passed for 1,002 yards with 7 touchdowns and 2 interceptions in his last 2 games. Coach Al Golden has turned Morris loose, and that could spell trouble for Notre Dame.

With as explosive as Miami is offensively, no lead is safe for Notre Dame. Catching this many points, it also gives us a solid backdoor opportunity with the Hurricanes if they get behind.

The Hurricanes are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games overall and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 versus a team with a winning record.

Also, teams coached by Golden are 9-0 ATS as an underdog of 10.5 to 21 points. His teams have only lost by an average of 4.7 points in these games. His Miami teams are a perfect 7-0 ATS versus good teams that are outscoring opponents by 10 points or more per game. They have actually defeated these foes by an average score of 28.6 to 24.0. Take the points.
